Chapter Twenty-Nine: Bewitched to Kill
Margot
After having Mum help me to shower, I dress in a loose, summer dress. I still feel a little hot and every inch of me aches, but thereâs also a crazy energy racing through my whole body. I think the energy that everyone said they could feel radiating from me has turned inwards.
The lounge is crowded with Beau, Samia, Coby, Neal, Penny, and Mum squeezed into the tiny space. They all watch me as if Iâm about to spontaneously combust.
âFeeling better?â Penny asks.
I force a smile. âI still feel like my legs arenât attached to my body, but Iâll be okay.â
Beau hands me a cup of sugary tea. âYou need to eat and drink.â
âI need fresh air and to stretch my legs. Iâm tired, but I feel like Iâm running with electricity inside. Will you walk with me?â I ask him.
Penny makes a move to stop us, but Mumâs glare cuts her off.
Outside is chilly and Iâm grateful. Iâm a little disoriented and jet lagged as I kind of missed a whole night. It feels like the incident at the beach happened just a few hours ago, although the pain I went through felt like an eternity.
Beau holds me firmly with an arm around my back and the other hooked under my arm. I lean into him to steady myself. As we walk the road toward the hall, people stop what theyâre doing or come out of their houses to greet us.
They are all looking at me differently, just like everyone at the cabin. Iâm sure they expect me to be glowing or something.
I see Elliot sitting on the porch of a cabin with his head bandaged up. I gingerly break away from Beau to see him. He rushes down from the porch to me, wrapping me in a grateful embrace.
âIâm so glad youâre alright,â I say. âHow are you doing?â
âIâm alive thanks to you. Iâve been told many stories about what happened. Thank you, Margot.â
Ally emerges from the cabin. Thereâs a moment where we just stare at each other, but then she, too, wraps her arms around me. âThank you for saving my brother.â
âOf course. I know everyone would do the same for me.â
She sighs audibly. âWeâre a pack. Youâre part of the pack.â A smirk plays at the edge of her mouth. âDoesnât mean I have to like you, though.â
I laugh. âGod, no, we canât have that.â
Allyâs mother takes my hand, crying and thanking me over and over. She touches my cheek like Iâm some sort of rare gem. Ally has to practically pull her away from me.
I keep having to remind myself that I am who they think I am. I manifested my powers⦠I have powers. The thought is both exciting and scary. I have no idea what I am capable of or even how to do it.
The woods suddenly hold a lot more fear for me. I am designed to kill whatever hides inside. With that thought, a familiar, dark feeling settles over me.
